Ok, I realize this question shows how ignorant I am about the real world, so I’m embarrassed but I have to be honest: I have no idea how health insurance works other than that it covers certain medical expenses! I’m just getting out of college so I am not used to having to deal with this. I know you pay a monthly fee, but what is a deductible? How does this work? For example, say a company charges $50/month with a $2,500 deductible fee…when would I have to pay the $2,500, if ever?
I need the most affordable health insurance possible… I am really struggling with money at the moment.
I am a U.S. citizen with a very very good health record. 22 yrs old and non-smoker.
I plan to travel to Canada (Montréal) and live there for about 6 months after I graduate. If I get health insurance in the U.S., will this cover me in Canada as well? Thank you for any info, it will really help me out a lot!

Think of insurance as pooled resources. You pay into it with a lot of other people, so if you need it it will be there. I do not know about the U.S., Canadian part though.
i don’t work for this site but I got my health insurance from there. A 2,500 deductible means if you get injured and your hospital bill is $7,000 (one day in ICU) you have to pay 2,500 dollars and your insurance will probably pay for the rest. A deductible usually restarts annually.
High deductibles are for folks who rarely go to the doctor.
As for Canada, you will have to buy private insurance.
You need to talk to blue cross and blue shield about a ppo I just had out patient surgery on my police if I go to the doctor I have to pay a co payment fee its 15$ when I had my surgery I had to pay 100 $ co payment the surgery bill was 3200 $ the regular doctor office visits where I pay the 15$ if they have to do x rays its like 175$ and the insurance pays all that on medication you can get generic for 10 or 15 $ and the most I pay for the real medication is 30 to 50 $ that’s fro prescription’s that would cost 160$ this is just a kind of idea you would have to make some phone calls or go on line what the co payments add up to are the deductible per year hope this helps
You ask “For example, say a company charges $50/month with a $2,500 deductible fee…when would I have to pay the $2,500, if ever?”
Whether or not you have any medical expenses, you pay $50 per month ($600 per year). This is called the “premium”. If you do have medical expenses, then you pay the first $2,500 (this is called the deductible) and they pay the rest. For example, if you had $2,501 in medical expenses, they would pay $1.
