I have lived and worked in the Philippines, now invest and snow bird to the Philippines. The philippines has some very good hospitals and the cost of medical care in fairly unexpensive compared to the states. You can have open heart surgery in the Philippines for a couple thousand dollars.
It is my humble opinion as long as you have a credit card or a balance pf a couple thousand dollars in your ATM you should not need health insurance. The money you save on extremely high travel insurance rates can probably cover the basic ER expenses.
Communicate with Americans, other western expats and Filipino Americans living in the Philippines. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LivingInTh… They will most likely inform you the same thing. In the Philippines in most cases a visit to the emergency toom or to see a doctor will cost you between $8.00 and $20.00.
