A few wks ago my friend went to Asia to do this volunteer thing & she like fell in love with the country and the ppl there & she doesnt want to come home now. Idk the whole deal but I talked to her best friend and from what I understand she was supposed to come home August 1 but she changed her flight to August 20 and now is like not wanting to come home at all. She’s 17 and doesn’t turn 18 till next yr but she finished high school already so Idk what rights she has. Right before she left there were these medical issues that came up and so her trip had to be cut short cause originally she was supposed to stay till the 20th anyway. But her dad was making her come back on August 1 because of the medical thing. I still dont know the results of the medical tests. She’d had this lump thing under her arm and they’d done a biopsy and all kinds of stuff and they were getting the results back in late July so that’s why she was coming back August 1. So yeah Idk if they said that she doesn’t have cancer and that’s why she wants to stay longer or if they said she does have it and she just doesnt want the treatment because ppl have said its worst than the disease and that’s why she wont come home. Her stepdad is gonna be in the country on business in a few days and her best friend said he is gonna fly up to the city where she’s now staying and get her and bring her back. But if she doesnt want to go can he make her? She said she’s really happy there and doesn’t want to come home. So can she be forced?

She can be forcibly returned against her will, if she does not return when her parents request her too. Not only that but her father can ask the State Department to cancel her passport in an effort to compel her return. And if she is found in China without a valid passport, she may be imprisoned. Her father can also go to the Chinese embassy and seek to have the Chinese government expel his minor child, which will not be good for her. So yes, she can be made to return to the United States and against her will! She will not enjoy being put on the plane in handcuffs with an armed guard and that could happen to her. As a minor, she has no legal right to defy her parents like this. Her parents are in a position to punish her severely when she returns. It is better that she returns as soon as possible.
With regard to her medical treatment, she is a minor and she cannot refuse her treatment. Once she is 18, then she can stop it. I do believe though that she is foolish to listen to people who say that it is worse than the disease. The treatment is certainly better than dying! Take care, and tell your friend to come home now or she will deeply regret it!
Well, as long as she is still a US citizen, I would say yes, but I would suggest you contact The U.S. Embassy in China or the Chinese one in America instead of yahoo answers.
I came to america and stayed here. I became a citizen three months after my 18th birthday. my parents don’t like me staying here.
i’m not 100% sure about this, but i think until 18 the parents have the right to bring her home. it might vary from where you live tho so its worth checkin out local laws i guess
Well if the parents are smart good parents she woulda been home august 1st. It depends on the parent.
She’s a minor, it’s highly likely her parents can force her to come home.
She can not stay there indefinitely without the proper paper work and that can’t be granted because she is under age.
It’s easy to fall in love with where you are.
We have traveled and lived abroad.
There are places we wanted to stay long term, but ultimately we had to come back to reality.
If your friend is facing a medical issue the best thing you and friends can do is not validate her fears of treatment is worse then the problem.
Find out what the medical issue is, do some research and educate yourself about it and how you can be a support.
When my father was diagnosed with cancer we all initially were shocked but relieved because they finally had a name for what was wrong and he could receive Chemo.
I have vested my time in checking out books from the library, online, and talking to places like The Cancer Treatment Center of America.
There is so much I have learned and tiny tidbits of info have been a great help to all of us.
