I’m a 13 (and a half) year old girl and I weigh 51 kilos (112.2 lbs) at 149 cms (4″11). I’m bordering on the overweight range for my height and weight. Recently I’ve started going to the gym – I do around 35 minutes of the treadmill, 20 minutes of the bike, and around 15 minutes of ab exercises. Obviously enough time hasn’t passed to show results, but I’m worried that I don’t do the right exercising. I kind of have fat “all over” my body, including my upper arms. What bothers me the most, other than the prominent fat on my lower belly, are my thighs. I don’t have much of a problem with my calves (which are sort of… large), but my thighs are big. Are there any exercises to reduce that fat? I know that it’s impossible to focus weight loss on a certain part of your body, so it’s a general question.
Also, I hate dieting, so neither do I want to go on a fad diet, or want tips on how to starve myself for a month. I pretty much cut out junk foods and sodas. My family’s Asian so we don’t really have an American food schedule – we eat small breakfasts, large lunches and light dinners. I want to know what are the right proportions of things like rice, chicken, white breads, and oily foods. (PS: I don’t do grams or ounces, the only thing that helps is a visual of the amount of food [ex: a serving of rice should be the size of two fists, etc.]) And what’s healthy and unhealthy to eat.
I was also curious about my calf musles. Since I started exercising, they’ve become pretty toned. Last year in school, we used to be timed on how fast we ran the mile and I was a slow runner. I don’t run on the treadmill to see if I’ve improved my timings, so I was wondering, with more toned muscles, would I be able to run the mile faster?
Please don’t think this is a question about losing weight fast or anything. I just want to be healthy and drop around 7 kilos and maintain it there, because a large part of my extended family is overweight and I don’t want to live an unhealthy lifestyle. I’ve seen problems obesity has caused – my great grandfather and my grandfather passed away because of artery-cholestrol blockage. I’m fine with my body image and self-esteem, but I am an adolescent so I do notice those thin, pretty, stereotypical girls – and besides, I think I’d be happier if I were in the healthy range and not teetering on the edge of it.
Any suggestions would help, and no one has to answer all the questions. I’d just like to know some good exercises and healthy eating patterns. Thanks to anyone who answers.

At 13, you will have that cushion of fat all over your body to prepare you for your body’s struggle with puberty. You are working out, so be careful to NOT fall under the spell of trying to loose weight. Although I think you are normal weight for 13 and your height, you will be building heavier muscle mass before the fat comes off, so you will measure heavier on the scale before your fat disappears.
The right proporations of bread and rice are to have them only occasionally. Bread and other carbs tend to gum up the digestive tract. They are alright occasionally, but you want to concentrate on the items with good poop moving fiber. Vegetables, some fiberous fruits unpeeled, and benefiber are much better choices over bread and rice. IF you like bread, look for the FlatOut brand from Best Life. Its like a borrito, but its bread.
The meals your family eats is a good thing. Light, heavy, light. Increase fresh fish. Your fist proporations are good. If you are not loosing weight, look for sugars and extra fats that might be hidden and sneek into foods.
Be sure to get the calcium you need and vitamine D. You need over 1,000 units of D every day. Ify ou keep eating right, D and the Omega 3s will help you battle the genetics of heart disease. Sounds too like you are eating and doing things OK, you just have to be consistent and religious about your program.
Remember too, as you grow, your body will put on a layer of fat and you might get a “winny the pooh” tummy about 1 or 2 months before you grow. You will be growing, as a woman, until you are 25, so get used to this process.
