My Two Year Old Has A Cut- Should I Take Him To Seek Medical Attention? Please Answer Quick!?

My son was running across the cement at the park an hour ago, barefoot, and tripped. The only injury he has is also his first “real” cut- so I’m not sure how to handle it.
His big toe has been cut open and was bleeding everywhere. The tip of it has piece of skin hanging off. It could be dead skin, but it was bleeding profusely.
Luckily I had a travel first aid kit, so I treated it immediately.
Usually my son shakes injuries off and wants to keep playing. This time, he asked to go home. He screamed the whole way home, which isn’t like him.
Now we are home and he is lying down with his foot elevated and bandaged up. I gave him some children’t Tylenol.
He isn’t crying and even asked to use the restroom. When he gets up to walk (he’s a determined little boy) he has to stay off of that toe.
His mood is somewhat alert and happy, but I know he is in some pain.
Should I call a medical professional or just continue to treat it at home?
We don’t have a good insurance plan.

continue to treat it at home… if it looks like it is getting infected or if it is really bothering him after a day or 2 then i would take him in but it sounds like you are doing great just as you are.

It sounds like you are doing everything that you can for it. Unfortunately, it is going to hurt him, it is his first ouchie. Just love him and tell him that it will be all right. just make sure to keep the cut clean and bandaged, and I would keep it dry for tonight, but other than that, there really isn’t much that the hospital will do for you. I remember the first time that my daughter got her first ouchie, we did go to the hospital, and I had a long talk with the Dr about letting her grow up etc. It is hard for a mom (I think harder for us than it is for the kids) He will be just fine, and you sound like you are doing a wonderful job.

Let him relax and im sure by tomorrow he will be just fine.

keep it clean and change bandage – if looks bad in 2 days – better see a doctor – might need stitches

I know you’re a good mom but i would run if not fly to the nearest hospital in record time, please see your doctor with your son immediately, thank you for your question.

I dont know if they would put stitches on the tip of the big toe, probably cut the dead skin off after the bleeding stops. Let the skin dry out some before you cut if off though. If the bleeding has stopped it should be ok.

its just fine. as long as you know how to treat it so it doesnt get infected just give it time.

Quick! Go to the hospital! You will pay 75 dollars the second you enter the doorway and everything after that will be in increments of 100. The doctor will tell you that its just a cut and probably squirt some saline into it. After that he will put on a 120 dollar band-aid with some 85 dollar neosporin. He will tell you to clean it and try to prevent infection. Oh for an extra 50 bucks he will give you a two day’s supply of band-aids. Hurry up and go! These are things you definitely can’t do by yourself. Godspeed!!!

i think he’s fine. over-reacting and taking him to the hospital or anything won’t help.. trust me. just keep it clean and use neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment.. and keep it covered until its not bleeding anymore. he should be okay. its not like his leg is hanging off, lol you know? if he is alert and happy, he is fine. he will let you know if he needs more help.

Treat it at home. Be sure it doesn’t get infected (red, hot to the touch, and making pus). If it gets infected he should go to the doctor. It sounds like he is okay since he is going to the bathroom and able to walk around. It is probably really disturbing and even a little scary to you with all the blood and being his first real big injury, but he will probably be okay. Just keep an eye on it and watch for infection.

just keep it clean and treat it a few times a day..we all use to get stub toes, he will be fine.

If you have stopped the bleeding, there is no reason to waist money at a hospital for a cut, especially if you have no insurance. They make this stuff called liquid bandage that works really good. It stings when you put it on because it has alcohol in it, but it works wonders. I would keep giving him the tylenol as recommended, and just keep it clean and he should be fine. Good luck.
