I want to work in London from August 08 – August 09 before I return for my masters in International Environmental Policy
Problems/Questions
1. Do I need to have a job lined up before I apply for my work visa?
2. How much does medical insurance cost for international travelers?
3. How much does it cost to live in London. Expensive, I know. But how much do I need to make to have a decent quality of life?
4. Will I have to travel to and from the US to get paperwork figured out?
5. Is it particularly difficult to find work in the UK?
More interesting issue:
English boyfriend of 1.5 years, IF we decided to get married, what country should we do it in?

It is not easy. You can’t just up and move. To get a job there is the most difficult bit. You have to have a skill they are in need of. You can look over their Skills Shortages List, of which I will provide a link. If you do NOT have one of those skills, you will need to find an employer that wants to hire you, and they have to show that they have ran an ad for the position and not been able to hire either a UK citizen OR an EU National. With either scenario, the employer will have to apply for your work permit on your behalf, after which you will be able to get a visa. Either you or the employer will pay for the visa, depending on the company.

Here are some links for ya.
as far as getting married, from what I’ve read it is easier to marry there, not here in America, as far as visas, etc goes.

You do not apply for a work visa in order to find work. You’d need to find an employer who’d be willing to sponsor your work permit. International companies are more likely to do this.
If you are lucky enough to get your work permit, you are entitled to free NHS in the UK.
It depends what you mean by ‘decent’. I worked as a language tutor at the Uni in London until 2006. I earned only 15K a year and I didn’t starve, but I had no money to go out at all. It wasn’t nice. I would say 30K for London.
It doesn’t matter where you get married. But if you decide to do it in the UK, you need to apply to the Home Office for the marriage visa first before your local registry office would let you get married. If you decide to do it in the US, you need to present your marriage certificate to get your spouse visa to enter UK.
Good luck.
1. My husband had to get his work permit from his company before we were allowed to move. Me and the kids are on a dependent visa on his work visa.
2. if you are working then you get NHS for free. Some companies will provide you with BUPA which I think the company pays for (allows you to go private for some things, not always NHS). Top go to a private Dr with no insurance is very expensive here.
3. Figure that you need to make double what you are making in the US. The exchange rate ahs been so high (2GBP to 1USD) that it makes it more expensive to live here. Plus, almost all places in London charge rent by the week, not the month. Try looking on http://www.primelocation.com (may be .co.uk I’m not sure) to get some ideas on rent.
4. You will need your paperwork done before you travel. Otherwise if you come to the UK you will need a return ticket to the US before they let you through immigration.
5. Not sure how difficult it is to find work. I know I have been looking (half-heartedly, lol) and have not found anything. But then, I was in advertising in Texas in a senior position, here they want to make an assistant again.
Honestly there are no jobs in the UK, taxes and crime are really high and all the British people are moving to Australia and the US
