My Husband and I have health cards but would like to know if they will be enough for medical cover whist we are in Europe. We dont need flights and baggage etc covered as we are travelling in our own motor home and our home insurance covers us for all our belongings whilst abroad.

No, the EHIC is definitely not sufficient insurance for 4 months travel in Europe. As has been said in another answer, the EHIC only covers the EEC not other countries and, even then, the cover is not sufficient to cover all eventualities. As you have a motorhome by far the best advice I can give is to join the Caravan Club and then to take advantage of their “Red Pennant” travel insurance which covers every possible unfortunate occurrence. It will, for example cover your vehicle for breakdown, including sending spare parts by courier if they are needed. But, more importantly, it covers both of you against illness and/or accident including, if necessary, repatriation by air ambulance for accident victims and repatriation of your vehicle by a driver sent by the club for this purpose if the two of you are unable to drive it back. I have taken a touring caravan to Europe countless times, always with the CC insurance and, on the only occasion we had to call on their services for a breakdown, they were brilliant.
EHIC is not enough. EHIC only covers you for state provided medical treatment as if you were a local. As such, you may only be covered for emergency medical treatment. Once you are no longer critical, you may be required to pay for your medical treatment. You are advised to take out appropriate insurance to cover your medical bills.
You should also note that the EHIC card is only valid in the EEA, not Europe – an important distinction as the EEA does not completely cover Europe.
Have a look at this site. Gives all information neccessary.
My wife and I have extra travel insurance through a £10 per month Lloyds T.S.B. package (A.A. cover uk, travel insurance, mobile phone and card insurance etc.)http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/art…
Hope this helps. Enjoy!
