Would you try to go to another country where you could get a legal abortion? Would you try to illegally obtain one in your own country if you couldn’t travel? Or would you resign yourself to going through with the pregnancy?
Bonus question: What if you also didn’t have health insurance? Would that effect your decision, the prospect of having to go through a pregnancy with limited access to proper medical care?
NOTE: Those that have moral objections to abortion, or who simply wouldn’t want to have an abortion themselves can skip this question as it is not pertinent to you.

I actually had a discussion like this with friends once when we were about 15 or 16 and Bush was still in office. One of my friends was afraid he’d succeed in overturning Roe vs. Wade or at least making it near impossible to obtain an abortion. We decided that if that happened and one of us got pregnant, we’d find someone with a car and drive her up to Canada. I’ve actually saved money in case such a situation were to arise. But our last resort plan was to have our legal friend get her copious amounts of alcohol, and cigarettes if she felt they were necessary.
If I lived in a place where abortion was illegal, the first thing I would do is take every possible precaution to prevent pregnancy in the first place.
If I ended up pregnant anyway I would :
1) Go to a country where I could get a legal abortion
or
2) consult an herbalist for a proper dose of pennyroyal or other plant based abortifacient
Of course, there is the odd chance I would consider continuing the pregnancy – it would depend on many factors, including the status of the relationship with the biol. father.
If I could find somewhere safe to get one, I would. If I had to resort to illegal means that would risk my life, I would probably decide to go through with the pregnancy, although it was be devastating to me. If it was made illegal and I was not yet pregnant, I would try to get my tubes tied and boyfriend a vasectomy. We are young, but our relationship is more important to me than having children. Thinking about it really makes me thankful that it is an available option and it shouldn’t be taken lightly! Of course prevention is extremely important though.
1- i’d do everything i could to NOT get pregnant in the first place.
2- if i still got pregnant, i’d either go somewhere else to get it done or go to a midwife / herbalist to get something to take at home. (and it would be super early in the pregnancy toa void as many complications as possible)
3- if it were dire & none of the above worked, i’d get desperate
as to health care–i’m used to not having any. it wouldn’t really factor into my decision.
Ladies, try an IUD. It is about as affective as getting your tubes tied. The rate of unwanted pregnancy would plummet drastically if women used IUDs instead of birth control pills.
To answer your question: I’d get a back alley abortion from a dwarf Mexican witch doctor with a hook hand. You aren’t giving me many choices, are you? So that is what I’d do.
I’m not all that much of a fan of abortion anyways, but I’m not completely against it, so if I found myself in a situation where it was necessary but illegal, I have a feeling I’d probably just resign myself to going through with the pregnancy.
I’m very conscious about my health and about respecting the law (even when I think it’s stupid or injust) . . . I don’t know that I could jeopardize both aspects.
then i’d deal with the fact that i’d be giving birth and having a baby.
But in reality, I would never have an abortion unless my life was at risk or the babies life was at risk
Why did I get so many thumbs downs? I said I’d keep the baby. Oh…. you think its wrong that I would have an abortion if my life or the babies was at risk? Really now….would you have a baby knowing that as a result you would die?
…..who would be STUPID ENOUGH to ALLOW THEMSELVES to be in that situation, outside of medical reasons to protect the mother or rape , with all of the birth control and education out there on the prevention of unwanted pregnancies there should be no need for abortions….oh my bad there are still FEEBLE FEMALES who are still DUMB ENOUGH to believe some of the lies of some men……sorry LOLOLOLOLOLOL
It would depend entirely on the situation and how desperate I was. If I had the money, certainly I would go abroad and get it done safely. Precedence tells us though that women will resort to anything from clothes hangers to surgical tubing to poison. Not pretty.
I wouldn’t go for an illegal abortion but I would defiantly try to get to a country where one could be performed.
I know a way to handle it early but I would not post that information here due to how many people of all ages read this board and may take drastic measures and make themselves sick!
There are things that are perfectly safe (and even healthy) for a non-pregnant woman to eat/drink/do that are bad for a fetus. I’d figure out what those things were and do them.
I’d use the extension cord. LOL
EDIT: To be honest I would never have an abortion unless it was threatening to my life to have the child.
Hand me a wire and some tongs and I’ll play my part in controlling the population.
Take as much golden seal root as I could handle with barfing it up, and wash it all down with pennyroyal tea. Instant abortion! (Or so I’ve heard.)
I’d go somewhere else and get one.
I am a 17 year old high-school student. I have dreams and high aspirations for myself. I want to go to college and then hopefully medical school. At this stage in my life, a pregnancy will destroy it all. I do not do drugs, alcohol, or sex. And I’m willing to abstain till I can afford to go on the pill. If the pill fails (and I’ll also make sure to use a condom), then my next course of action will be Plan B. If that fails then my only outlet is an abortion. I’ll try very hard to protect myself; if all fails then it isn’t my fault and my only option is an abortion: I work very hard academically and will do everything to ensure my academic success. A baby is out of the question. Now. If abortion were made illegal in the US, I would drive to Canada to get one. No questions asked. If that weren’t possible, I would try to induce a miscarriage.
some people didn’t read your note
I’m pro-choice, but I don’t think I’d have an abortion if my life didn’t depend on it. I’m close enough to graduating college now that it would make things difficult, but wouldn’t ruin the rest of my life.
But to play along … Uhm, I’d try to go to another country first. If that wouldn’t happen, I just wouldn’t go see a doctor because I have a genetic clotting disorder that would just cause a miscarriage pretty quickly anyways. Although I’d be putting my own life in danger in that case :-/ I definitely wouldn’t do a back-alley abortion tho, those are too dangerous and I’m too chicken.
And just because you don’t have health insurance doesn’t mean that you can’t go see a doctor. It just means that you’ll run up a large bill. So that wouldn’t change my decision.
Probably try and figure out a way around it. Like if you see in “Vera Drake” the middle class woman has no problem getting an abortin by saying she would suicide otherwise. Yes, I might try and go out of the country. I doubt I would do it illegally, wouldn’t risk it. So probably just go through with it.
However, that’s my view in my situation, where abortion is legal and I probably would choose not to have one, if I really did want one then my answer might be different, does that make sense? I’m can’t help looking at it through my current situation.
I don’t live in the US so we’re not so stupid about health insurance here and I would get pre-natal care. If not, that would probably be a factor in my decision yes.
Harriet
NO!!!!!!! i would never get an abortion

IDc if i aint have health asurance i would go to school and right when school out i would head to work i would work my best and object no money
I’d rather die than have an abortion.
